Motorcycle Insurance in North Carolina

Motorcycle insurance—like car insurance—is a legal requirement in North Carolina. Depending on your chosen coverage, it may help protect your financial stability after a covered accident or incident. While motorcycle insurance is like car insurance, there are some key differences. Motorcycles are often considered riskier than cars, which can affect the cost and type of coverage available.

Types of Motorcycle Coverage

Motorcycle insurance typically includes several types of coverage, including the following:

  • Liability coverage—This policy may help cover costs if you’re at fault in an accident that causes injury or property damage to others. It only covers the other party’s expenses—not cover your injuries or damages to your motorcycle.
  • Collision coverage—If your motorcycle is damaged in an accident, collision coverage may help cover repair costs. This applies regardless of who is at fault in the accident. However, collision coverage usually requires a deductible, which is the amount you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket before your insurance kicks in.
  • Comprehensive coverage—This coverage may help cover damage to your motorcycle from incidents other than a collision—like theft, vandalism or natural disasters. Comprehensive coverage also typically requires a deductible.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage—If you are in an accident where the at-fault driver has no insurance or inadequate coverage, this policy may help cover damage to your motorcycle and your medical bills.

North Carolina Requirements

North Carolina motorcyclists are required to have liability insurance that meets the state’s minimum requirements. Many riders choose to purchase additional coverage for added protection.

If you lease or finance a motorcycle, the lienholder may require full coverage insurance, including collision, comprehensive and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

Factors Affecting Motorcycle Premiums

Several factors can affect the cost of your motorcycle insurance premium in North Carolina, including the following:

  • Your driving record—Drivers with clean records may pay less for insurance than those with accidents or violations. Insurance companies view drivers with a history of safe driving as less risky to insure.
  • Your motorcycle—The make, model and value of your motorcycle can affect your premium. More expensive bikes typically cost more to insure because they would be more costly to replace or repair.
  • Your location—Where you live in North Carolina can also impact your premium. Areas with higher crime rates or more traffic may lead to higher premiums. For example, if you live in a city with a high rate of motorcycle theft, you may pay more for comprehensive coverage.
